Friday, 18th December 2009

Queensland's leading racehorse trainer Bruce McLachlan "died early this morning" aged 67, reported The Courier-Mail. McLachlan "who had returned home only yesterday after a short stay in hospital for a medical procedure, was found dead at about 2.45am". McLachlan trained more than 3,000 winners in a 40-year career & won both this year's Gr1 Golden Slipper & Magic Millions 2YO Classic with Phelan Ready. McLachlan worked originally as a policeman based in Mt Isa, before starting his training career from a hand-built stable at Brisbane's bayside Cribb Island. He landed his 1st winner Risdon Gem at Albion Park in October 1968 & in the early 1970s moved to train at Bundamba in Ipswich, before later relocating again to Eagle Farm in Brisbane. McLachlan won his 1st Brisbane premiership in 1978-79 & in the mid-1980s moved to a specially built private racing centre at Thornhill Park near Caboolture. His star gallopers included St Jude, Planet Ruler, Chortle, With Me, Al Mansour, Sublimate, Virage de Fortune, Crimson Reign & Acorns. About 5 years ago McLachlan sold Thornhill Park & moved to Caloundra racetrack on the Sunshine Coast. (Jun 3)
