Tuesday, 6th April 2010

Trainer Colin Little confirmed 4-time Gr1-winning 8YO gelding El Segundo (Pins-Palos Verdes, by Oak Ridge) has been retired after injuring a tendon when finishing 5th in the weekend's Gr1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill. Little told The Herald-Sun: "Some thought he'd been checked when he seemed to be wrenched sideways in the straight but there was no check, he just blew a tendon." El Segundo (a NZ$140,000 yearling at the 2003 NZB Premier Sale at Karaka) recorded 12 wins (including the Gr1 Cox Plate over 2040m, Gr1 Orr Stakes over 1400m, Gr1 Underwood Stakes over 1800m, Gr1 Yalumba Stakes over 2000m, Gr2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes over 1600m, Gr2 Carlyon Stakes over 1200m, Gr2 Memsie Stakes over 1400m & Listed JRA Cup over 2040m) & 8 placings (including the Gr1 Cox Plate over 2040m, Gr1 Futurity Stakes over 1600m, Gr1 Yalumba Stakes over 2000m, Gr2 Carlyon Stakes over 1200m & Listed Aurie's Star Handicap over 1200m twice) from 35 starts for $3,964,375 earnings.
