Eskendereya Wins US Gr1 Wood Memorial

Tuesday, 6th April 2010

Meanwhile on the other side of the US in New York, former Coolmore shuttler Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat-Mariah's Storm, by Rahy) added a Gr1 triumph when boom Zayat Stables colt Eskendereya (Giant's Causeway-Aldebaran Light, by Seattle Slew) jumped into Gr1 Kentucky Derby favouritism when he slaughtered his rivals by 9.75-lengths in the US$750,000 Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes (9 furlongs) for 3YOs at Aqueduct. Eskendereya (ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher) defeated fellow colts Jackson Bend (Hear No Evil-Sexy Stockings, by Tabasco Cat) & Awesome Act (Awesome Again-Houdini's Honey, by Mr Prospector). At his previous start, Eskendereya similarly blitzed his rivals by 8.5-lengths in February's Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes (9 furlongs) at Gulfstream Park in Miami in Florida. Overall Kentucky-bred Eskendereya (a US$250,000 yearling at the 2008 Keeneland September Sale) now boasts 4 wins (also including 2009's Listed Pilgrim Stakes over 8 furlongs at Belmont Park) & a runner-up from 6 starts for US$725,700 earnings.
