Rosehill Whip Furore 5: Cummings Lashes Murrihy
Jockeys & trainers "have lost confidence in the rulings of Racing NSW chairman of stewards Ray Murrihy," reported The Daily Telegraph. Legendary trainer Bart Cummings (who prepared Michael Rodd's mount Faint Perfume) said Murrihy was "too focused on making his name in the media" & declared: "This steward makes the rules to make himself more powerful. Stewards & umpires should be seen & not heard. He's very unpopular." A "senior jockey" told the newspaper there was "a collective disenchantment among riders over Murrihy's strict interpretation of the rules" & claimed: "Jockeys have lost confidence in the way the rules are being interpreted. To fine Michael $2,000 for 2 extra hits . . . . What is the fine going to be for 5 or 10 extra hits, $10,000? That would be ridiculous." The newspaper also noted: "The most a jockey has been fined in Victoria was Nick Hall's $1,000 penalty in his Australian Cup win on Zipping & there have been no suspensions in the state - but 64 in NSW."
