Sidney's Candy Wins US Gr1 Santa Anita Derby

Tuesday, 6th April 2010

In the US, front-running colt Sidney's Candy (Candy Ride-Fair Exchange, by Storm Cat) quickly recovered from a starting gate stumble to race away for a decisive 4.5-lengths victory (& notch his 3rd consecutive graded-stakes win) in the US$750,000 Gr1 Santa Anita Derby (9 furlongs on all-weather) for 3YOs at Santa Anita Park in California. Sidney's Candy (ridden by Joseph Talamo for trainer John Sadler) confirmed his credentials for May's Gr1 Kentucky Derby in defeating fellow colts Setsuko (Pleasantly Perfect-Dance With Grace, by Mr Prospector) & severely-hampered favourite Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike-Private Feeling, by Belong To Me). Sidney's Candy (a home-bred for Jenny Craig's Craig Family Trust) took his record to 4 wins (also including both March's Gr2 San Felipe Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Santa Anita & February's Gr2 San Vincente Stakes over 7 furlongs at Santa Anita) & a runner-up from 6 starts for US$673,560 earnings.
