Kentucky 2YOs: US$525k Maria's Mon Colt
Trainer John Ward (acting for John Oxley) paid US$525,000 for a colt by Gr1-winning former champion juvenile Maria's Mon (out of unraced 17-year-old stakes-producing Last Tycoon mare La Cucina) consigned by Eddie Woods as agent. Ward & Oxley have enjoyed great success with Maria's Mon's sons Monarchos (who won the 2001 Gr1 Kentucky Derby) & multiple Gr2-winner Strong Contender & Ward told bloodhorse.com: "We want to buy horses that are Derby-type animals & that's him. We think this horse is a really, really nice horse. His price was a little on the strong side, but he's probably one of the best 10 horses I've seen for the sale season so I'm happy. He's a beautiful mover with no wasted motion." The colt (who clocked 10.2sec for 1 furlong during the pre-sale breeze-up session) previously sold for for US$500,000 at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale. He is a half-brother to Gr2-winners Miss Isella (who topped Keeneland's January Horses-Of-All-Ages Sale when sold for US$1.085 million) & Sir Cherokee (a multiple stakes-winning sire), while his dam La Cucina is a half-sister to English stakes-winner Ocean Air.
