Kentucky 2YOs: US$625k Bernardini Colt

Wednesday, 7th April 2010

In the US auction ring, John Moynihan (bloodstock adviser to Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables) paid top price of US$625,000 for a colt by triple Gr1-winning Darley shuttler & former US Eclipse Award winner Bernardini (out of Gr3-winning 10-year-pld Carson City mare Moonlight Sonata) at the 1-day Keeneland April 2YOs-In-Training Sale in Lexington in Kentucky. Bernardini's 1st foals are 2YOs in 2010 & this colt (consigned by Kentucky-based trainer Bill Helmbrecht as agent for Woodbridge Bloodstock & already named Wilburn) clocked 33.8sec for 3 furlongs during the pre-sale breeze-up session. Moynihan told bloodhorse.com: "He's a great big horse; he's almost 16.2 hands. He looks like he's a big, 2-turn horse to me. He went beautiful on the racetrack." The colt is also a half-brother to Gr2-winner Beethoven & Moynihan added: "We like Bernardini & the mare has produced a good horse with the same cross, so we'll take a shot. The price was high for me. I had Mr Jackson on the phone & he always decides. But the price was pretty stout."
