Smith Asserts: "Whipping About Money & Nothing Else"

Thursday, 8th April 2010

Meanwhile prominent columnist Patrick Smith concludes his discussion of the whip issue in The Australian with the assertion: "So far Australia - to the country's shame & discredit - is the only nation in the world which has twice changed a whip rule so that horses can be beaten more viciously. As yet we have not found one person who can make a reasonable case that the whip is not a tool of punishment. That's because, free of the hubris of racing folklore, the issue of whipping is about money & nothing else." Smith concludes his column with the broadside: "The Australian sent a picture of a 2YO with heavy whip markings after a recent race meeting at Rosehill to the Australian Racing Board for a response. A spokesman said it was likely just to be the whip rearranging the hair on the horse's rump. Really? We'll believe that when hairdressers start styling clients' hair with a good thrashing of the whip."
