Threat To Geld Gr1 Vic Derby Winner Monaco Consul

Thursday, 8th April 2010

Trainer Michael Moroney confirmed Gr1 Victoria Derby winner Monaco Consul (High Chaparral-Argante, by Star Way) "will be racing for his manhood in the Gr1 AJC Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on Saturday," reported The Sydney Morning Herald. Moroney declared: "He has to start doing something to prove he is a stallion prospect or else we will do something about it! We have threatened him with the thing no colt wants to happen to him." Monaco Consul is unbeaten in Australia (with a Gr1 win in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick before his Derby success at Flemington) but has since failed to perform in 3 runs in New Zealand "leaving Moroney searching for answers". Moroney added: "We have nothing to lose by running him in this (Saturday's AJC Derby). If he wins, he is a dual derby winner, then he is a stallion. If not, we might have a very good gelding in the spring. He already has spring form, which everyone is looking for & we're hoping he can discover that form. We thought we had him right again before the (Gr1 New Zealand) Derby at home, but he just locked his jaw before the turn & ran off."
