Inglis Easter Day-3: $1.3m Zabeel Filly
Victoria's Lakeview Resources principal Peter Carrick paid top price of $1.3 million for a filly by NZ Cambridge Stud's multiple champion sire Zabeel (the 7th foal out of unraced 15-year-old Defensive Play mare Gin Player) during the closing session at the 3-day Inglis Easter Yearling Sale at Newmarket in Sydney. The filly (consigned by Matamata-based Rich Hill Thoroughbreds on behalf of breeder Scott Williams) is a half-sister to dual Gr1-winner Zarita, NZ Gr2-winner Run Like The Wind & recent Dubai Gr3 Al Quoz Sprint winner Joy And Fun. Rich Hill's John Thompson said he & Williams arrived in Australia "hoping to receive between $600,000 & $700,000, but "it soon became apparent she was going to be very keenly sought after. There's such a big build up with a filly like this & she's been hugely popular on the grounds, but you still have your doubts until the bids actually come, so it's a fantastic result. It's Rich Hill's 1st million dollar yearling, so it's very satisfying & a huge thrill." Carrick (who has raced the likes of Gr1-winner Kaphero) said he regards this filly as "a perfect fit" for his broodmare band at Arcadia near Nagambie & declared: "She is without doubt the filly of the sale. Once you have your mind made up on what you want it, doesn't matter what you pay in the end. Whether this filly is successful in racing, she is going to be a classic broodmare. Lee Freedman (trainer) introduced the horse to me. We have been looking for a serious broodmare page & this was just a stand out."
