US Sire Dixieland Band Euthanased Aged 30
In the US, Dixieland Band "1 of the original 3 stallions at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky & sire of 117 stakes-winners, was euthanased due to the infirmities of age" reported bloodhorse.com. Multiple Gr2-winner Dixieland Band (Northern Dancer-Mississippi Mud, by Delta Judge) retired from racing & entered stud in 1985 when Lane's End was established by William Farish. His progeny have subsequently earned US$75.7 million & include Drum Taps (a champion in England & Italy), Gr1-winner Dixie Union (who also stands at Lane's End), champion Cotton Carnival, Gr1 French Oaks winner Egyptband & Gr1-winners Spinning Round, Dixie Brass, Alwajeeha & Sharp Lisa. In addition, Dixieland Band "has been among the top 10 leading North American broodmare sires for the last 8 years" & has been represented by mares that have produced 134 stakes-winners & US$131 million in earnings; he was leading broodmare sire in 2004 & is currently 7th on the 2010 list. Two Gr1 Kentucky Derby winners (Monarchos in 2001 & Street Sense in 2007) were produced from daughters of Dixieland Band.
