Karelian Wins US Gr1 Maker's Mark Mile

Veteran 8YO gelding Karelian (Bertrando-Leaning Tower, by Theatrical) scored a 1.25-lengths victory in the US$300,000 Gr1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes (8 furlongs on turf) for 4YOs & up at Keeneland. Karelian (ridden by Julien Leparoux for trainer George Arnold) defeated favoured 5YO entire Court Vision (Gulch-Weekend Storm, by Storm Bird) & 7YO entire Society's Chairman (Not Impossible-Athena's Smile, by Olympio). Karelian took his record to 10 wins (also including last start's Listed Tampa Bay Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs on February 20, plus both 2008's Gr3 River City Handicap over 9 furlongs at Churchill Downs & Listed Sea O'Erin Mile Handicap over 8 furlongs at Arlington Park) & 4 placings (including 2009's Gr1 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes over 8 furlongs at Keeneland & 2007's Listed Kitten's Joy Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Colonial Downs) from 21 starts for US$738,675 earnings.
