1st Night Racing Meeting At Launceston Tonight
Tasmania's 1st formal thoroughbred night racing meeting will be held at The TOTE Racing Centre at Mowbray in Launceston tonight (following last week's dress rehearsal meeting under lights). Tasracing chief Gary Lottering declared: "It is an historic night for the Tasmanian racing industry & thoroughbred participants. There is no question that there is enormous potential for night thoroughbred racing in Australia & beyond. It is therefore very important for the Tasmanian industry to be operating in this space alongside tracks in Melbourne, Sydney & Queensland, given the potential financial benefits it can deliver." Tasmanian Turf Club chief executive Robert Biffin said Tasmania was operating "in a rapidly growing international market" & noted: "We are very excited about gaining access to a potentially lucrative market through night racing. The TTC has been interested in night racing for some time, given the potential funding stream it opens up for the industry." Tasracing is planning to hold 3 night meetings this season: 15 April, 29 April & 20 May; no night time race meetings are planned for the winter months & they will resume in September.
