Inglis Mares Day-3: $2m Sun Classique
In the auction ring, post-sale negotiations last night led to multiple Gr1-winning 6YO mare Sun Classique (Fuji Kiseki-Elfenjer, by Last Tycoon) being sold to Patinack Farm for $2 million after the 3rd session at the 4-day Inglis Easter Broodmare Sale at Newmarket in Sydney. Earlier in the day, Sun Classique had been passed-in when bidding stopped at 1.95 million (her reserve was $2 million); she had been consigned by Widden Stud as agent & offered in-foal to boom European sire Oasis Dream. Inglis managing director Mark Webster commented: "She commanded so much presence & it was a privilege to watch her parade today. We're very pleased that a deal has been done this evening & she has commanded a price that a mare of her standing fully deserves." Sun Classique (born & raised at Widden in the NSW Hunter Valley prior to her export to South Africa in June 2004) was originally sold in-utero at this same sale in 2003 (when her dam Elfenjer went for $32,500). Sun Classique was retired after her undefeated Dubai campaign in 2008, where she won both the Listed Cape Verdi Stakes (1600m) at Nad Al Sheba & Listed Balanchine Stakes (1777m) at Nad Al Sheba, before defeating her male rivals to win the Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic (2400m) at Nad Al Sheba & take her record to 9 wins (from 1200-2400m) from 15 starts for the equivalent of A$4.2 million earnings. During the previous 2006-07 season, Sun Classique was named South Africa's Champion 3YO Classic Female (1600m+) at the annual Equus Awards. During 2007 she won both the Gr1 Woolavington 2200 (2200m) at Greyville & Gr1 Majorca Stakes (1600m) against older rivals at Kenilworth; & in 2006 she won the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas (1600m) at Kenilworth & Gr3 Diana Stakes (plus finishing runner-up in both the Gr1 Paddock Stakes & Gr1 Thekwini Fillies Stakes).
