Nikolic Refuses Meeting Today With Stewards

Wednesday, 21st April 2010

Meanwhile "fed up & irate Danny Nikolic will refuse chief steward Terry Bailey's order that he be subjected to yet more probing before the 1st race at Sandown today," reported The Herald-Sun. Nikolic described as "the final straw" Bailey contacting him yesterday "on the day of his grandfather's funeral, to demand he attend today's continuation of an inquiry the jockey describes as a fishing expedition". Nikolic had "heated words with Bailey last night, after he & owner John O'Neill spoke about O'Neill's interview" (with stewards yesterday). Nikolic told the newspaper: "I've had a gutful. He (Bailey) contacted my father (John) just as we were burying my grandad. He (Bailey) said he was sorry under the circumstances, but said he wanted to interview me before the 1st race at Sandown. He is totally out of order. First he grills my mates over nothing, then he hassles the family on the day of my grandfather's funeral. And for what? He's got nothing & I've done nothing wrong." Nikolic said he had been "asked to front Bailey several times on days he had riding commitments" & declared: "I've got a job to do. I'm not going to be grilled by Bailey on this witch hunt on days I've got race rides. It's affecting me, affecting my riding. He can talk to me next Friday when I'm not riding." Nikolic also revealed he had "unsuccessfully attempted to meet Racing Victoria chairman Michael Duffy & Racing Integrity Commissioner Sal Perna to discuss his frustration".
