US Gr1-Winner Red Giant Shuttles To NZ Westbury

Friday, 23rd April 2010

New Zealand's Westbury Stud announced world record holder & US Gr1-winning 6YO stallion Red Giant (Giant's Causeway-Beyond The Sun, by Kingmambo) will join its roster for the 2010 breeding season. Red Giant (who stands at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky) set a world record 1min 57.16sec for 10 furlongs on turf in 2008's US Gr1 Clement Hirsch Turf Championship at Santa Anita & also set a Colonial Downs course record of 1min 59.62sec for 10 furlongs in the 2008 G2 Virginia Derby. Overall Red Giant recorded 6 wins (also including the Gr2 Fourstardave Handicap over 8.5 furlongs at Saratoga & Listed Restoration Stakes over 8 furlongs at Monmouth Park) & 4 placings (including runner-up in both the Gr1 Secretariat Stakes over 10 furlongs at Arlington Park & Gr2 Jamaica Handicap over 9 furlongs at Belmont Park) from 12 starts for US$1,092,410 earnings. Westbury manager Russell Warwick enthused: "Being able to purchase the Southern Hemisphere standing rights in a world record holder is a great thrill & adds an important dimension to our stallion roster going forward. We were really keen to find a high class middle-distance performer & what better than a world record holder! The fact that no horse in the history of horse racing has ever run that fast over 10 furlongs (2000m) on grass, is a huge compliment to the horse & the timing couldn't be better, with his sire Giant's Causeway currently the leading sire in the US while his son Eskendereya is the favourite for next month's Gr1 Kentucky Derby." Russell added: "The fact that Red Giant was a fast stayer is perfect for NZ in today's climate. There is no doubt we are seeing a growing demand for horses able to perform at a middle-distance, but the flipside of this is that they must still have speed, as owners & trainers don't want to wait until they are 4YOs anymore." Red Giant is the 1st son of Champion racehorse Giant's Causeway (76-stakes-winner to date) to stand at stud in NZ; in Australia, his 1st sire-son with runners Shamardal has already produced dual Gr1-winner Faint Perfume, Gr3-winner Shamoline Warrior, stakes-winner Run For Wilson & Gr1-placed No Evidence Needed.
