Able One Wins HK Gr1 Champions Mile

Tuesday, 27th April 2010

Former Darley shuttler Cape Cross (Green Desert-Park Appeal, by Ahonoora) added a HK Gr1 triumph when 7YO gelding Able One (Cape Cross-Gardenia, by Danehill) scored a 0.75-length victory in the HK$12 million (A$1.72m) Gr1 Champions Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin. Able One (ridden by Australian jockey Darren Beadman for expatriate Australian trainer John Moore) defeated fellow 7YO gelding Fellowship (O'Reilly-Mystical Flight, by Danzalion) & 4YO gelding Beauty Flash (Golan-Wychwood Rose, by Volksraad) to claim this race for the 2nd time (having also won in 2007). Able One (bred by Sir Patrick Hogan but whose career has frequently been interrupted by injury) was originally a NZ$190,000 yearling at the 2004 NZB Select Sale & later resold for NZ$270,000 at the 2004 NZB 2YOs-In-Training Sale. Overall he now has 8 wins (7 in HK, also including last start’s Gr2 Chairman's Trophy over 1600m on April 4, plus 2008's Gr3 Premier Cup over 1400m & 2007's Gr1 Champions Mile over 1600m) & 3 HK placings (including 2008's Gr1 HK International Mile over 1600m) from 30 starts (29 in HK) for HK$21,316,500 (A$3.05m) earnings. Meanwhile Australian-bred 6YO gelding Dao Dao (Shinko Forest-Casual Way, by Casual Lies) finished last in the field of 12 & jockey Jeff Lloyd commented: “I got across pretty easily from the wide gate to race in 2nd. He seemed to travel well enough until around the 600m, but then I started feeling for him & he just didn’t respond.”
