Singapore Star Rocket Man Targets Gr1 Manikato

Wednesday, 28th April 2010

Australian-bred 4YO gelding & star Singapore sprinter Rocket Man (Viscount-Macrosa, by McGinty) “is a likely Melbourne Spring visitor with the Gr1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley his target,” reported The Herald-Sun. Following Rocket Man’s weekend victory in Singapore’s Gr1 Lion City Cup (1200m) at Kranji (to claim that race for the 2nd successive year), trainer Patrick Shaw confirmed “the Melbourne spring was on his agenda, along with the Gr1 Sprinters Stakes in Japan in October after he runs in the Gr1 KrisFlyer Sprint (1200m) in Singapore on May 16”. Shaw enthused: “I'd love to race in Australia. He's bred there & has a big following there. The race that appeals is the Manikato. It's got the same turn & short straight as here” (Kranji). Rocket Man also has a nomination for England’s Royal Ascot carnival in June, but Shaw “ruled that out” noting: “He'll spell after the KrisFlyer.” Rocket Man (a $60,000 yearling consigned by Tyreel Stud at the 2007 Magic Millions National Sale on the Gold Coast) currently boasts 9 wins & 2 Gr1-placings from 11 starts for S$1,226,475 (A$981,000) earnings.
