50,000 Annual US Foals "Way Too Much Product"

Thursday, 29th April 2010

Breeders' Cup president Greg Avioli also told the International Equine Summit the fact fewer foals are being bred "isn't necessarily a negative" reported bloodhorse.com. Avioli emphasised that even with recent declines 50,000 foals is "way too much product." He called the 50,000+ non-graded races run in the US each year "essentially a commodity" & noted there is "about US$200 million in revenue from handle produced each month"; Avioli commented that, if the money went to "the right number of tracks & races" the industry would benefit. He declared bluntly: "Instead of 20 well-run tracks we have close to 500 entities that suck off the mother (teat) of that money. We need to get rid of some of them."
