Monday, 3rd May 2010

In the US, fairytale 4YO entire General Quarters (Sky Mesa-Ecology, by Unbridled's Song) was headed in the straight but fought back to prevail in a 3-way photo-finish to the US$550,000 Gr1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (9 furlongs on turf) at Churchill Downs. General Quarters (ridden by Rafael Bejarano for retired high school principal & 1-horse-stable owner-trainer Tom McCarthy) scored by a neck from favourite & top-weighted 5YO entire Court Vision (Gulch-Weekend Storm, by Storm Bird) with a further head to Irish-bred 6YO entire Loup Breton (Anabaa-Louve, by Irish River). General Quarters (a US$20,000 yearling at the 2007 Keeneland September Sale) took his record to 4 wins (also including 2009's Gr1 Blue Grass Stakes over 9 furlongs at Keeneland & Gr3 Sam Davis Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs) & 8 placings (including March's Gr2 New Orleans Handicap over 9 furlongs at Fair Grounds & February's Gr3 Mineshaft Handicap over 8.5 furlongs at Fair Grounds, plus 2009's Listed Pasco Stakes over 7 furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs & 2007's Listed Inaugural Stakes over 6 furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs) from 18 starts for US$1,075,740 earnings.
