Monday, 3rd May 2010

Former Coolmore shuttler & champion 2YO Johannesburg (Hennessy-Myth, by Ogygian) added a US graded-stakes success when 4YO mare Phola (Johannesburg-Humbling, by Petionville) scored a 1.25-lengths victory in the US$223,000 Gr2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile (8 furlongs on turf) for fillies & mares at Churchill Downs. Phola (ridden by Ramon Dominguez for trainer Todd Pletcher) defeated fellow 4YO mares Hot Cha Cha (Cactus Ridge-Reduced Sentence, by Broad Brush) & Irish-bred Miss Keller (Montjeu-Ingozi, by Warning). Phola (a US$50,000 yearling at the 2007 Keeneland September Sale) took her record to 5 wins (also including last start's Gr3 Hillsborough Stakes over 9 furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs on March 13) & 4 placings (including 2008's Gr3 Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes over 8 furlongs at Arlington Park) from 11 starts for US$330,163 earnings.
