Monday, 3rd May 2010

Coolmore-based stallion & Australian Champion Sire of the last 2 seasons Encosta de Lago (Fairy King-Shoal Creek, by Star Way) added a juvenile black-type success (& 67th individual stakes-winner) when debutant colt Smokin' Joey (Encosta De Lago-Dalzing, by Blazing Sword) scored a 2-lengths victory in the $100,000 Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) for 2YOs at Caulfield in Melbourne. Smokin' Joey (ridden by Chris Symons for trainer Lee Freedman) defeated favoured filly Miss Elvee (Elvstroem-Luxapal, by Kenny's Best Pal) & fellow filly Sistine Angel (Testa Rossa-Famous Painter, by Peintre Celebre). Smokin' Joey earned $60,500 for victory at his 1st start; he is a full-brother to Gr2-winning & multiple Gr1-placed Our Smoking Joe.
