Special Duty Wins UK Gr1 1000 Guineas

Monday, 3rd May 2010

Also in the UK overnight, deceased Gr1-winning former Coolmore shuttler Hennessy (Storm Cat-Island Kitty, by Hawaii) added a Gr1 triumph when favoured daughter Special Duty (Hennessy-Quest To Peak, by Distant View) was 2nd-past-the-post by a nose behind wayward Jacqueline Quest, but then awarded victory by stewards, in the £400,000 (A$664,000) Gr1 1000 Guineas (8 furlongs) for 3YO fillies at Newmarket. Special Duty (ridden by Stephane Pasquier for French trainer Criquette Head-Maarek) duly defeated Irish-bred Jacqueline Quest (Rock Of Gibraltar-Coquette Rouge, by Croco Rouge) & fellow Irish-bred Gile Na Greine (Galileo-Scribonia, by Danehill). At her previous start Special Duty finished 3rd in France's Gr3 Prix Imprudence (1400m) at Maisons-Laffitte on April 8; & last year as a 2YO she won the UK Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes (6 furlongs) at Newmarket & France's Gr2 Robert Papin (1100m) at Maisons-Laffitte, as well as finishing runner-up in both France's Gr1 Prix Morny (1200m) at Deauville & Listed Yacowlef (1000m) at Deauville.
