Super Saver Wins US Gr1 Kentucky Derby
In the US, Kenny Troutt & Bill Casner's WinStar Farm home-bred colt Super Saver (Maria's Mon-Supercharger, by A.P.Indy) scored a 2.5-lengths victory in the US$2 million Gr1 Kentucky Derby (10 furlongs) for 3YOs at Churchill Downs in Kentucky before 155,804 fans in wet & windy conditions. Super Saver (ridden by Calvin Borel for trainer Todd Pletcher) defeated fellow colts Ice Box (Pulpit-Spice Island, by Tabasco Cat) who motored home down the outside from last-in-running & Paddy O'Prado (El Prado-Fun House, by Prized). Super Saver took his record to 3 wins (also including 2009's Gr2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes over 8.5 furlongs at Churchill Downs) & 3 placings (including last start's Gr1 Arkansas Derby over 9 furlongs at Oaklawn Park on April 10 & March's Gr3 Tampa Bay Derby over 8.5 furlongs at Tampa Day Downs) from 7 starts for US$1,826,432 earnings. This was the 2nd Kentucky Derby winner for ill-fated sire Maria's Mon (he also produced 2001 winner Monarchos) who was euthanased in September 2007 following "multiple organ dysfunction".
