In South Africa, former Heytesbury Stud shuttler Second Empire (Fairy King-Welsh Love, by Ela-Mama-Mou) added a group success when Australian-bred 7YO entire Tropical Empire (Second Empire-Tropical Touch, by Pago Pago) scored a 3.25-lengths victory in the R350,000 (A$50,000) Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes (1400m) at Greyville to go one better than last year's runner-up in this same race. Tropical Empire (ridden by Stuart Randolph for trainer Duncan Howells) defeated 6YO gelding Braggadacio (Western Winte-Fair Bianca, by Priceless Asset) & 4YO gelding Imperial Gesture (Al Mufti-Imperial Guest, by Northern Guest).
