Yearling Sale Profit Tied-To "Post Career" Value

Monday, 10th May 2010

US Fox Hill Farm principal Rick Porter (who bought Hard Spun for US$400,000 & sold him to Darley for US$35 million) told Thoroughbred Daily News: "One thing I have learned is that it's not the hardest thing in the world, if you manage things properly & have a good trainer or trainers, to break even when it comes to purse income versus expenses. The real problem is how are you going to get this investment back? We'd go to Keeneland & spend US$1 million, then US$2 million & then US$3 million a year. How were we going to get that money back? I started to analyse the business & figured out pretty quickly that the only way you're going to get this money back is to come up with a stallion or an expensive broodmare."
