Green Birdie Wins Singapore Gr1 KrisFlyer Sprint

Also in Singapore yesterday, ill-fated Gr1 Golden Slipper-winning Yarraman Park sire Catbird (Danehill-Fitting, by Marscay) added a Gr1 triumph when 6YO gelding Green Birdie (Catbird-Mrs Squillionaire, by Last Tycoon) scored a 0.3-lengths victory S$1 million (A$800,000) Gr1 KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) at Kranji. Green Birdie (ridden by Mark Du Plessis for trainer Caspar Fownes) defeated Australian-bred 4YO gelding Rocket Man (Viscount-Macrosa, by McGinty) & Australian-bred 5YO gelding Happy Zero (Danzero-Have Love, by Canny Lad); in addition Australia's visiting Gary Portelli-trained 5YO gelding Gold Trail (Hussonet-Trail Of Gold, by Danewin) finished 4th after leading & visiting David Hayes-trained 4YO gelding Eagle Falls (Hussonet-Desina, by Desert King) finished 5th in the field of 10. At his previous start a fortnight ago, Green Birdie (a NZ$230,000 yearling at the 2005 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale at Karaka) finished runner-up in the HK Gr2 Sprint Cup (1200m) at Sha Tin; & back in 2008 he won the Gr2 HK Derby Trial (1800m) at Sha Tin, as well as finishing 2nd in the Gr1 Hong Kong International Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin & 3rd in both the Gr1 Mercedes-Benz HK Derby (2000m) at Sha Tin & Gr2 International Sprint Trial (1200m) at Sha Tin. And earlier in his career he also placed in both the 2007 HK Gr3 Sha Tin Vase (1200m) & 2006's Australian Gr2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield.
