Special Duty Wins French Gr1 Pouliches-2000 Guineas

Monday, 17th May 2010

Also in France overnight, a sensational aftermath to the €450,000 (A$653,00) Gr1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (1600m) for 3YO fillies at Longchamp saw 1st-past-the-post Liliside demoted to 6th following an extraordinary stewards' inquiry which involved several separate incidents & lasted over an hour. In the end, deceased Gr1-winning former Coolmore shuttler Hennessy (Storm Cat-Island Kitty, by Hawaii) added a Gr1 triumph when UK-bred daughter Special Duty (Hennessy-Quest To Peak, by Distant View) was promoted to the winning position (despite being unaffected by the various scrimmages) ahead of Baine (Country Reel-Benzolina, by Second Empire) & Irish-bred Joanna (High Chaparral-Secrete Marina, by Mujadil). At her previous start a fortnight earlier on May 2, Special Duty (again ridden by Stephane Pasquier for trainer Criquette Head-Maarek) similarly won the UK Gr1 1000 Guineas (8 furlongs) at Newmarket on May 2 after also being 2nd-across-the-line but then promoted by the stewards. Previously this season, Special Duty also finished 3rd in France's Gr3 Prix Imprudence (1400m) at Maisons-Laffitte in April; & last year as a 2YO Special Duty won the UK Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes (6 furlongs) at Newmarket & France's Gr2 Robert Papin (1100m) at Maisons-Laffitte, as well as finishing runner-up in both France's Gr1 Prix Morny (1200m) at Deauville & Listed Yacowlef (1000m) at Deauville. Overall she now has 4 wins & 3 placings from 7 starts.
