Trainer Paragallo Gets 2 Year Sentence & US$33,000 Fine
Following his conviction in early March of "33 animal cruelty counts" involving "mistreating dozens of malnourished horses", a New York court "has sentenced former Thoroughbred owner and breeder Ernie Paragallo to two years in jail and fined him $33,000 for animal abuse charges". In addition, "The New York State Racing and Wagering Board has initiated administrative action seeking to prevent Paragallo from returning to racing". Paragallo, 52, was charged after authorities raided his 500-acre farm in April 2009 & seized 177 malnourished horses.
