Incentives "Seal Sydney Super Club Deal"
The merger between the Australian Jockey Club (Royal Randwick & Warwick Farm) & Sydney Turf Club (Rosehill Gardens & Canterbury Park) "is now certain" declared columnist Ken Callander this morning in The Daily Telegraph. "The move to commit Sydney to one race club is being driven by the government." A meeting "was held last Thursday, run by Sports Minister Kevin Greene & attended by the Minister For State Development Ian Macdonald as well as representatives of the 2 clubs, led by Ron Finemore (chairman of the AJC) & Bill Picken (chairman of the STC). The government well & truly laid its cards on the table & I am told it has been privately conceded that, with what is being offered, for the good of Sydney racing the merger will happen." Callander noted: "The thinking is it is better to go to the members of the 2 clubs & recommend a merger while you have some bargaining power, rather than have the merger forced on you". All that is needed now "is for a few sticking points to be thrashed out & for the representatives of the 2 clubs to go back to their boards (which will happen this week) & seek their support."
