Nicconi To Stand At Widden Stud
NSW Hunter Valley-based Widden Stud announced "the acquisition of explosive sprinter Nicconi, who is currently in training for a tilt at the Gr1 King's Stand Stakes (5 furlogs) at Royal Ascot in June for which he has been installed favourite by British bookmakers". David Hayes-trained Gr1-winning 4YO sprinter Nicconi (Bianconi-Nicola Lass, by Scenic) is a half-brother to 5-time Gr1-winner Niconero & boasts 6 wins (including January's Gr1 Lightning Stakes over 1000m at Flemington, plus 2009's Gr1 The Galaxy over 1100m at Randwick, Gr3 McEwen Stakes over 1000m at Moonee Valley & Listed Wellington RC Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield) & 4 placings (including 2009's Gr1 Manikato Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley, Gr2 D'Urban Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield & Listed Darby Munro Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill, plus 2008's Gr3 Danehill Stakes over 1200m at Flemington) from 13 starts for $988,450 earnings. Widden's Antony Thompson enthused: "Blessed with an electric turn of foot, Nicconi is a very masculine thoroughbred with a powerful sprinter's physique that is going to make him a popular addition to our roster. Widden have purchased the 4YO with some of his current owners retaining a stake in his future stud career, so there will be a percentage of Nicconi to be syndicated with shares available for interested parties." Nicconi will travel to the UK next week & on his return will retire to Widden Stud this spring at a fee of $22,000 "for breeders that book now, although that fee could be subject to change dependent on his performance at Royal Ascot".
