Qld Breeders Welcome Hendra Vaccine Funding
Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association president Bob Frappell declared he is "ecstatic" about the joint Queensland-Federal Government $600,000 funding for research into a Hendra Virus vaccine for horses. Frappell commented: "It's fantastic that the Governments have finally put up the money. The thoroughbred industry should not have had to bear the brunt of this costly research, as Hendra affects all sectors of the equine industry." However Frappell also noted: "As the vaccine is still years away, it is important that we continue to educate people about risk management." Frappell said the TBQA website has "in-depth information on Hendra Virus, following a TBQA seminar conducted last year". Meanwhile the Australian Animal Health Laboratory has indicated it will still take 4-5 years to fully develop a vaccine to be sold commercially, "though a trial vaccine should be available in about 2 years".
