Geordieland Out Of Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup
Veteran UK 9YO stayer Geordieland (Johann Quatz-Aerdee, by Highest Honor) who finished 18th of 23 runners in 2006 Gr1 Melbourne Cup (behind Delta Blues) before placing in the last 3 runnings of England's prestigious Gr1 Ascot Gold Cup (2nd in 2007 & 2008, plus 3rd in 2009, all behind champion stayer Yeats) "is to miss this year's race on June 17," reported racingpost.com. Trainer Jamie Osborne confirmed Geordieland "had met with a few minor setbacks in recent weeks and, as a result, was short of the required work to take up the challenge". Osborne added: "With Yeats retired we thought it may be our turn, because if ever a horse deserved to win a Gold Cup it must be Geordieland. It's frustrating, but we'll just have to wait until next year. He'll be 10 by then, but there's still some juice in his orange." Evergreen Geordieland boasts 7 wins & 17 placings from 35 starts for £541,601 (A$932,000) earnings.
