Hayes Confirms Dettori To Ride Nicconi At Ascot
Australian trainer David Hayes confirmed Godolphin's top jockey Frankie Dettori will ride his Gr1-winning 4YO sprinter Nicconi (Bianconi-Nicola Lass, by Scenic) in his UK debut in the Gr1 King's Stakes (5 furlongs) at Royal Ascot on June 15. Hayes told The Daily Telegraph: "There is no doubt local knowledge is a real advantage. I like the idea of using an English jockey & there is none better than Frankie. He knows Royal Ascot, he's ridden there for 20 years & he knows the local jockeys, which is important. The way I see it, having the best local rider like Frankie might give us that extra half-length & that might be the difference between winning & losing." Dettori is expected to partner Nicconi in fast work at Newmarket next week in preparation for Royal Ascot. Hayes (who leaves for England on Thursday) also revealed Nicconi had lost 10kg on the flight over to England, but had taken little time to settle into his new surrounds at Newmarket, adding: "Nicconi is a very sensible horse, for a stallion he's no trouble & he's coped with the travelling very well. He's had an easy few days, but we will start giving him some light exercise in the next few days then look to give him some fast work next week."
