Quality Road Wins US Gr1 Metropolitan Handicap

In the US, former Darley shuttler Elusive Quality (Gone West-Touch Of Greatness, by Hero's Honor) added a Gr1 triumph when favoured 4YO entire Quality Road (Elusive Quality-Kobla, by Strawberry Road) notched his 2nd successive Gr1 success with a 1.5-lengths victory in the US$500,000 Gr1 Metropolitan Handicap (8 furlongs) at Belmont Park in New York. Front-running & top-weighted Quality Road (ridden by John Velazquez for trainer Todd Pletcher) defeated fellow 4YO entire Musket Man (Yonaguska-Fortuesque, by Fortunate Prospect) & 5YO entire Tizway (Tiznow-Bethany, by Dayjur). At his previous start, Virginia-bred Quality Road earned a rating as the US's top galloper this year when he slaughtered his rivals by 12.75-lengths (& smashed his own track record) in February's Gr1 Donn Handicap (9 furlongs) at Gulfstream Park in Miami. Quality Road (bought-back on a bid of US$110,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September Yearling sale) took his record to 7 wins (also including January's Gr3 Hal's Hope Stakes over 8 furlongs at Gulfstream Park, plus 2009's Gr1 Florida Derby over 9 furlongs at Gulfstream Park, Gr2 Amsterdam Stakes over 6.5 furlongs at Saratoga & Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes over 8 furlongs at Gulfstream Park) & 3 placings (including 2009's Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup over 10 furlongs at Belmont Park & Gr1 Travers Stakes over 10 furlongs at Saratoga) from 10 starts for US$1,632,830 earnings.
