US 5 Furlongs Record-Holder Chinook Pass Dies At 31
In the US, 1983 Champion Sprinter Chinook Pass (who still holds the record for the fastest 5 furlongs on dirt in North American racing history at 55.2sec) was euthanased at owner Jill Hallin's farm in Maple Valley in Washington state after being "in distress from heart malfunction", reported bloodhorse.com. Chinook Pass (the only Washington-bred to win a US Eclipse Award) was "believed to be the oldest living Eclipse Award-winner". Overall Chinook Pass (Native Born-Yu Turn) won or placed in 21 of 25 starts (including 11 stakes-wins & 4 stakes-placings). US Hall-Of-Fame jockey Laffit Pincay junior (who rode Chinook Pass to 7 stakes victories) once declared: "Affirmed (1978 US Triple Crown winner) was the best horse I ever rode, but Chinook Pass was the fastest!"
