US 2009 Champ 3YO Male Summer Bird Retired To Stud

Friday, 4th June 2010

In the US, last year's Gr1 Belmont Stakes winner & Champion 3YO Male Summer Bird (Birdstone-Hong Kong Squall, by Summer Squall) has been retired to stud (for the 2011 breeding season) "due to complications of a fracture suffered last fall (Northern Hemisphere autumn) prior to the Gr1 Japan Cup Dirt," reported bloodhorse.com. Summer Bird retires with 4 wins (including 2009's Gr1 Belmont Stakes over 12 furlongs at Belmont Park, Gr1 Travers Stakes over 10 furlongs at Saratoga & Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup over 10 furlongs at Belmont Park) & 2 placings (including 2009's Gr1 Haskell Invitational Stakes over 9 furlongs at Monmouth Park & Gr2 Arkansas Derby over 9 furlongs at Oaklawn Park) from 9 starts for US$2,323,040 earnings. (Summer Bird's own sire Birdstone also won both the Gr1 Belmont Stakes & Gr1 Travers Stakes as a 3YO in 2004.) Summer Bird's owner-breeder Dr K.K.Jayaraman said several stud farms "have expressed interest in acquiring a percentage in the horse, but no plans have been finalised at this point".
