Winchester Wins US Gr1 Manhattan Handicap

Also in New York, Virginia-bred 5YO entire Winchester (Theatrical-Rum Charger, by Spectrum) charged home from the rear of the field to score a half-length victory in the US$400,000 Gr1 Manhattan Handicap (10 furlongs on turf) at Belmont Park. Winchester (ridden by Cornelio Velasquez for trainer Christophe Clement) defeated favoured fellow 5YO entire & stable-mate Gio Ponti (Tale Of The Cat-Chipeta Springs, by Alydar) & another 5YO entire Expansion (Maria's Mon-La Sylphide, by Barathea). Winchester took his overall record to 4 wins (also including 2008's Gr1 Secretariat Stakes over 10 furlongs at Arlington Park) & 5 placings (including February's Gr2 Mac Diarmida Handicap over 11 furlongs at Gulfstream Park, plus 2009's Gr2 McKnight Handicap over 12 furlongs at Calder, Gr3 Sycamore Stakes over 12 furlongs at Keeneland & Listed Bowling Green Handicap over 11 furlongs at Belmont Park, as well as 2008's Irish Listed Silver Stakes over 10 furlongs at The Curragh) from 16 starts for US$672,243 earnings.
