Star Singapore Filly Mexican Rose Heads To Melbourne
In Singapore, trainer Laurie Laxon confirmed top 3YO filly Mexican Rose (Volksraad-Down View, by Gone West) will head to Melbourne for the Spring Carnival before being retired to stud. Mexican Rose (a NZ$85,000 yearling at the 2008 NZ Bloodstock Select Sale at Karaka) notched 2 wins from her initial 3 starts in New Zealand, before shifting to southeast Asia & recording a further 7 wins (including April's Gr3 Kranji Sprint over 1200m, March's Gr3 Merlion Trophy over 1200m & 2009's Gr3 Juvenile Championship over 1200m) & a placing from her 10 Singapore starts. Laxon explained the filly (with her rating of 102) would find it difficult racing on in Singapore (giving weight to the seasoned handicappers); hence the decision to send her to Melbourne. Laxon noted: "I spoke with (owner Tang) Weng Fei & we were thinking of retiring her & sending her to stud in NZ. But then we thought seriously about it & there are some nice fillies & mares races at set-weights that will suit her & some weight-for-age races that may also be appropriate. She has got to the stage where she will find it hard to win with the weights she will be asked to carry in open handicaps & should she race at weight-for-age then she will be taking on Rocket Man & she can't beat him. The option to take her down to Melbourne is a good one & if she is able to pick up some Australian black-type, then it only adds to her value as a broodmare. She is a sensible filly & the travel down to Australia won't be a worry to her in any way."
