US Champion Summer Bird To Stud At Pauls Mill

Wednesday, 9th June 2010

In the US, Pauls Mill owner Ben Walden announced last year's Gr1 Belmont Stakes winner & Champion 3YO Male Summer Bird (Birdstone-Hong Kong Squall, by Summer Squall) will enter stud in 2011 at his Kentucky farm & K.K. & Devi Jayaraman (who bred & campaigned the colt) "will retain a major ownership interest". Summer Bird was retired last week "due to complications of a fracture" suffered at the end of the 2009 season. Summer Bird recorded with 4 wins (including 2009's Gr1 Belmont Stakes over 12 furlongs at Belmont Park, Gr1 Travers Stakes over 10 furlongs at Saratoga & Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup over 10 furlongs at Belmont Park) & 2 placings (including 2009's Gr1 Haskell Invitational Stakes over 9 furlongs at Monmouth Park & Gr2 Arkansas Derby over 9 furlongs at Oaklawn Park) from 9 starts for US$2,323,040 earnings. Walden declared: "You'd have to look long & hard to find a classic winner whose 1st 3 sires are classic winners & whose 1st 3 dams are by classic winners. Summer Bird is an unqualified talent with an outstanding physique. He is truly a great American dirt horse."
