Portelli Says Aust Sprinter Gold Trail "Perfect" For Royal Ascot

Thursday, 10th June 2010

Australian trainer Gary Portelli declared his Gr1-winning 5YO sprinter Gold Trail (Hussonet-Trail Of Gold, by Danewin) has thrived since his arrival at Newmarket to prepare for next Tuesday's UK Gr1 King's Stand Stakes (6 furlongs) at Royal Ascot. Portelli told Sky Sports Radio: "He's back to 515kg (after the long trip to the UK) which is perfect. He's as fit as I can get him without knocking the edge off him. It's quite easy to flatten a sprinter over here because the tracks are quite undulating." Portelli added he isn't discounting an Australian quinella in the race, because he considers the David Hayes-trained fellow Australian Gr1-winning 4YO sprinter Nicconi (Bianconi-Nicola Lass, by Scenic) as the horse to beat, noting: "There's a chance a few of the locals will drop out & I honestly think Nicconi is the only one who can beat us. We'll be watching for Nicconi for sure because he is a class horse fresh."
