Monday, 14th June 2010

On the Australian track over the holiday long weekend, Queensland's Beaudesert-based Willowbend Stud stallion Clang (Bellotto-Sudden Impulse, by Luskin Star) added a Gr1 triumph when 6YO gelding Black Piranha (Clang-Jazztrack, by Distinctly North) flashed down the extreme outside of the field to snatch a last-stride victory in a 4-way photo-finish to the $1 million Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm in Brisbane, to win this race for the 2nd successive year. Black Piranha (ridden by Nash Rawiller for trainer Con Karakatsanis) scored by a short-halfhead from 3YO filly Melito (Redoute's Choice-Cloister, by Marauding) with a further long-head to 4YO gelding Mic Mac (Statue Of Liberty-Amandine, by Tertian). Black Piranha (a $16,000 weanling at the 2004 Inglis National Sale & then a $41,000 yearling consigned by Kulani Park at the 2005 Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale) took his record to 8 wins (also including 2009's Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap over 1400m at Eagle Farm & Listed Sunshine Coast Cup over 1400m at Caloundra) & 16 placings (including March's Gr2 Canterbury Stakes over 1300m at Rosehill, plus 2009's Gr1 Arrowfield Stud George Main Stakes over 1600m at Randwick, Gr1 Doomben 10,000 over 1350m at Doomben, Gr1 Doncaster Handicap over 1600m at Randwick, Gr1 George Ryder Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill, Gr3 Patinack Farm Cameron Handicap over 1300m at Newcastle & Magic Millions Cup over 1400m at the Gold Coast, as well as 2008's Gr2 Shannon Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill) from 46 starts for $2,514,155 earnings.
