Canford Cliffs Wins UK Gr1 St James's Palace Stakes

Irish-bred favourite Canford Cliffs (Tagula-Mrs Marsh, by Marju) scored a 1-length victory overnight in the £250,000 (A$433,000) Gr1 ST James's Palace Stakes (8 furlongs) for 3YO colts at Royal Ascot. Canford Cliffs (ridden by Richard Hughes for trainer Richard Hannon) defeated fellow Irish-bred colt & stable-mate Dick Turpin (Arakan-Merrily, by Sharrood) & Hearts Of Fire (Firebreak-Alexander Ballet, by Mind Games). Canford Cliffs was a €46,000 (A$67,000) weanling at the 2007 Goffs November Sale & later a £50,000 (A$87,000) yearling at the 2008 Doncaster August Sale. At his previous start, Canford Cliffs also won May's Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas (8 furlongs) at The Curragh & overall now has 4 wins (also including 2009's UK Gr2 Coventry Stakes over 6 furlongs at Royal Ascot) & 3 placings (in May's UK Gr1 2000 Guineas over 8 furlongs at Newmarket & April's Gr3 Greenham Stakes over 7 furlongs at Newbury, plus 2009's French Gr1 Prix Morny over 1200m at Deauville) from 7 starts.
