NSW Court Confusion 2: Racing "Thrown Into Disarray"

Thursday, 17th June 2010

Under the headline "Court Win For Online Bookies", The Australian Financial Review reported bluntly: "The Federal Court has ruled that attempts by NSW authorities to head off the threat of online bookmakers breached the constitution, a decision which has thrown the racing industry into disarray." Racing NSW "may be forced to refund $50 million in so-called 'race fields' fees levied on interstate wagering companies, although the regulator said it was exploring legal options to avoid refunds". Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'landys asserted: "There is a long way to go on this legal process; this is only just the start of it." However the newspaper commented: "The decision will increase pressure on the federal government to support a national approach to the way racing authorities levy fees on bookmakers."
