Qld Racing Warning On Gold Coast Bats

Thursday, 17th June 2010

Queensland Racing announced there is "a large colony of fruit bats roosting in bush land adjacent to the Traintech facility" & in order to "minimise the risks of a Hendra virus outbreak in the Gold Coast horse population, it is advised that, effective immediately, the walkway surrounding the bush land adjacent to Traintech as well as the grass area to the east of the bush land are designated 'no-go' areas for horses. This includes horses being walked or picked." This is "an interim measure to minimise the risk of horses coming into contact with bat excretions (eg. saliva, urine) potentially containing Hendra virus". Negotiations with the Gold Coast Council & Queensland Department Of Primary Industries "are proceeding to explore options for a permanent solution to the problem".
