US Gr2-Winner Battle Plan Retired To Stud
Also in the US, Overbrook Farm's Gr2-winning homebred 5YO stallion Battle Plan (Empire Maker-Flanders, by Seeking The Gold) "has been retired from racing because of a torn suspensory in his right front leg", injured while finishing runner-up as favourite in last weekend's Gr1 Stephen Foster Handicap (9 furlongs) at Churchill Downs, reported bloodhorse.com. Battle Plan (who missed nearly all of last season with a hairline fracture of his cannon bone) was undefeated in 3 previous starts in 2010 & "rode a 4-race win streak into the Foster, including the Gr2 New Orleans Handicap (9 furlongs) at Fair Grounds in late March in his stakes debut". Battle Plan led by 4-lengths entering the final furlong in the Foster, before finishing 2nd (beaten 0.75-length). He retires with 4 wins & a runner-up from 6 starts for US$373,143. Battle Plan is a half-brother to champion Surfside, while his triple Gr1-winning dam Flanders (also an Overbrook home-bred) was 1994 US Champion 2YO Filly. Breeding plans are still to be confirmed, but Overbrook advisor Ric Waldman "indicated there have already been discussions with some farms that have shown interest in standing the 5YO," reported Thoroughbred Daily News.
