Hayes Wants Nicconi To Start In UK Gr1 July Cup
Widden Stud "is trying to revise travel plans to allow dual Gr1-winning 4YO Australian sprinter Nicconi (Bianconi-Nicola Lass, by Scenic) to have one more English start" before he returns to Australia to begin his breeding career at the NSW Hunter Valley-based farm, reported The Daily Telegraph. Trainer David Hayes is "convinced English racegoers didn't see the best of Nicconi in the Gr1 King's Stand Stakes (5 furlongs) at Royal Ascot last week" (when a fast-finishing 4th after coming from last-in-running) & "is desperate to run" in next month's Gr1 July Cup (6 furlongs) at Newmarket. Widden's Antony Thompson told Sky Sports Radio: "As far as David is concerned, there is unfinished business & he really wants to run Nicconi in the July Cup. The way he hit the line in the King's Stand suggests the 6 furlongs of the July Cup will suit him. We are going to head to that race with a good deal of excitement & confidence." Thompson explained the "key to a July Cup start could rest with arrangements for another Australian stud-bound star", last Saturday's Gr1 Golden Jubilee Stakes (6 furlongs) winner Starspangledbanner (Choisir-Gold Anthem, by Made Of Gold), noting: "We will know in the next week what Coolmore are doing with Starspangledbanner & if we are able to team up with them getting Nicconi back to Australia."
