Parliament Petition To Retain Vic Betting Shops

Thursday, 24th June 2010

Meanwhile a petition with more than 8,000 signatures has been tabled in the Victorian parliament "calling on the continued existence of retail betting agencies (TABs) when the Victorian government awards the new 10-year wagering licence," reported racenet.com.au. Victorian Off-Course Agents' Association president John Haberman said the petition "confirms communities want a guarantee the local betting shop will remain where customers are able to watch the races or footy & have a bet in an alcohol-free, safe & staffed environment". Haberman added: "As well as our customers, our communities are also backing us as they want to see local small businesses flourish. The petition calls for the continued, viable operation of existing retail betting agencies to be part of the next wagering licence, whoever the Brumby government awards it to." Victoria's Brumby government "is expected to award the licence (which comes into effect in 2012) later this year". TABCorp currently owns the wagering licence.
