Son Of Aust Gr1-Winner Porto Roca In Gr1 Irish Derby

Thursday, 24th June 2010

In Ireland, the 1st Northern Hemisphere foal from Australian Gr1-winner Porto Roca (Barathea-Antelliere, by Salieri) will contest this Sunday's Gr1 Irish Derby at The Curragh, after connections confirmed they would pay a late entry fee for 5-time-winning 3YO colt Monterosso (Dubawi-Porto Roca, by Barathea) reported racingpost.com. Monterosso won last week's Gr2 King Edward VII Stakes (12 furlongs) at Royal Ascot (to take his record to 5 wins & 2 runners-up from 8 starts) & trainer Mark Johnston commented: "The horse seems very well. I've done this a couple of times before, so it's tenterhooks from now until Sunday, but we can't see any reason not to go." Monterosso's Gr1-winning Australian-bred dam Porto Roca (a half-sister to NZ Gr1-winner Bluebird The Word) won Australia's Gr1 Coolmore Classic & Gr3 Tattersalls Winter Stakes (now a Gr1), as well as placing in the Gr1 Futurity Stakes, Gr1 Australasian Oaks & Gr1 Eat Well Live Well Cup; she had 4 foals in Australia (3 winners) before Darley bought her & sent her to Europe in late 2005.
