Top US Sire Mr Greeley Euthanased Aged 18

In the US overnight, Gainesway Farm announced former Victorian shuttler Mr Greeley (Gone West-Long Legend, by Reviewer) was euthanased aged 18 after his condition deteriorated following a bout of laminitis. Kentucky-bred Mr Greeley boasts 53 stakes-winners (& 107 stakes-performers) with 8 Gr1-winners including multiple Gr1-winning European champion filly Finsceal Beo. On the track Mr Greeley was a leading sprinter-miler, notching 5 wins (including 1995's Gr3 Spectacular Bid Stakes, Gr3 Swale Stakes & Gr3 Lafayette Stakes, plus runner-up in the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Sprint) from 16 starts for US$474,452 earnings. Mr Greeley began his stud career at Dixiana Farm & sired at least 1 Gr1-winner from each of his initial 4 crops, including US Gr1 winner El Corredor, Australian Gr1 Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kournikova & UK Gr1 Sussex Stakes winner Reel Buddy. In 2001 Mr Greeley moved to Spendthrift Farm, before being purchased by Gainesway for the 2006 breeding season. He had progeny earnings of at least US$3.9 million for 8 successive seasons & boasts overall progeny earnings in excess of US$50 million. In the auction ring, a colt out of German Gr1-winner Silvester Lady sold for US$5.7 million at the 2006 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
